‘Man’ has always wanted to build a better mouse trap. We want new & improved, super - sized, bigger, faster, more ‘awesomer’ and with extra, no maximum, strength. Maybe we look to improve because we know we need to. But God doesn’t need improvement, therefore, good is good enough for Him. During Creation, the word ‘good’ was used seven times by God to describe His work. So if good is good enough for God, then it should be good enough for us. And besides, something can’t be more ‘gooder’. Because God is perfect, He is good with good because good…
IS WHO HE IS…
”The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him.” Nahum 1:7
James 1:17 states, ‘every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.’ Just as light is always light, God is always good and does not waver. In fact, He is incapable of doing anything evil or wrong. Even if God makes a harsh judgment, it is good because He is the perfect judge and so it was deserved. From God’s goodness, He desires to give us mercy. His nature is not to punish, but to love - on this we rely. If God were not good, who of us would have made it past 5?
…AND IT’S WHAT WE ARE.
”For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10
If we are born - again, goodness is a part of our DNA. We were created to do good, and for good reason - to be like Jesus. But this is not natural for us (we don’t teach kids to lie or to be stingy). This is why we need the Holy Spirit. Without Him, doing good is forced, and ultimately feels phony. With the Holy Spirit, goodness becomes natural. What hinders us from doing good is disappointment and hurt. These cause us to doubt God’s goodness, so we wrest control from Him to try and ease our pain. Also hindering us is the false notion of perfection in the world, and our needless pursuit to be perfect. God is the perfect one, and so He just wants us to do good works.
