The Alpha and Omega
“Man is like a breath; his days are like a fleeting shadow.” Psalm 144:4
Animals and the Angels are wise enough to do just what God says. If God really needs to get something done, He should just ask them because they don’t argue, question or talk back. This is because they know who’s the boss.
Most pack or herd animals (even chickens), are able to figure out ‘who’s who in the coop’ (the pecking order). But we humans struggle with this, which was evident with the Disciples. Imagine what Jesus thought as He heard them arguing over who was the top dog, something they did on occasion. What the Disciples needed to settle in their hearts is the same thing we must come to terms with - Jesus is the Alpha and Omega of the group, who goes…
BEFORE US…
“I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, Who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” Revelation 1:8
Even the greatest need someone to lead and guide them. The reason is no-one knows what lies ahead. We can’t even learn from history. But the Alpha, our leader, the One who is, and who was, and who is to come, He knows what we must do, how it’s to be done and most importantly, when it must be done. God supersedes and supervises all time - He has never been bound to a clock. Given this, we’d have to be fools to not want God to be the lead. We should want the toughest, strongest, wisest one in front of the pack. Uh, that ain’t you or me!
…AND BEHIND US.
“…For the Lord will go before you, the God of Israel will be your rear guard.” Isaiah 52:12
All of the armor of God, that we are to put on pertains to facing or moving forward. This is because God’s got our back. As the Alpha, God is our leader. But also as the Omega, being Omni (all) - Present, He is our rear guard. There are two ways to look at this: #1, God protects us from behind so we do not have to worry about an ambush, thus we can focus on the task before us; #2, The One who has our back is also the One who covers us. By His blood, Jesus has covered our past so it can no longer plague us. As our Alpha, The Lord has set us free from the fears of the future, and as Omega, from the worries of our past.
