”What other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today?” Deuteronomy 4:8
How would life be without rules? No laws = no limits… of evil. Of course, some people would be good, honest and trustworthy, but probably not many. Most people would do whatever they wanted, exploiting the weak for their own benefit. This is why the Lord gave us a set of laws to follow - we need boundaries. The Ten Commandments (not suggestions) were given for this very reason, lines that we are not to cross. But this is also why Jesus died on the cross - we crossed out and over the lines. God’s laws are still in effect and we must adhere to them because:
OUR FATHER IS FIRM…
”He declared to you His covenant, the Ten Commandments, which He commanded you to follow and then wrote them on two stone tablets.” Deuteronomy 4:13
God is very serious about His laws, to put it mildly. If we break even one of them we are considered ‘lawbreakers’. There are those who think God is unfair to have these laws and that we should be left to make our own decisions about right and wrong. Wrong! We can never trust our consciences to lead us down the right path - we change too much. But God never changes. He is always firm about what is good and what is evil. He is the only one we can trust with laws that are best for all living things.
…BUT HE IS ALSO FAIR?
”…What I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach. It is not up in heaven…, Nor is it beyond the sea…, No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it.” Deuteronomy 30:11-14
Contrary to the views of God’s enemies, He is extremely fair. Yet I believe God is not at all fair - He is just though. The difference between just and fair: justice requires there to be a payment for sin; fairness requires the violator to pay. But God Himself paid for our sin - extremely unfair and yet justice is served. God is fair and clear in regards to how we are to live. He is not asking of us what is beyond reason or our reach. Not only can we do what God asks, He has also given His word and the Holy Spirit to assist us.
