”As he thinks in his heart, so is he.” Proverbs 23:7
There will always be a direct correlation between our thought life and our actual life. We go where the mind leads. As I was growing up, there was an ad for the United Negro College Fund which stated, ‘A mind is a terrible thing to waste’. How about we change that to, ‘The mind is a terrible thing.’ The reason for this is a lot of ugly stuff goes on inside our pee pickin’ brains, if we’re not careful. One of the most powerful tools in our lives is our imagination. If used for good, it is great - if not, it can destroy us. This is the great power of our thought life and why it’s so important to learn how to train our brain so that we:
THINK ON THE LORD…
”You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast…” Isaiah 26:3b
PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a very debilitating condition resulting from a past trauma. But many people today suffer with a different kind of PTSD - PRE - Traumatic Stress Disorder. This does not come from a prior event, but when we project something bad for our future. The nasty culprit for this projection is typically anxiety. Anxiety is a precursor to fear. Anxiety - fear - whichever we call it, actually cripples us even though nothing has actually happened to indeed cripple us. What we are doing is giving the thought of what ‘might’ happen the power to happen. Job 3:25 says, ‘What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happened to me.’
…TRUST IN THE LORD.
”…Because they trust in You.” Isaiah 26:3b
‘Perfect peace’ comes from God and is undisturbed and unwavering, but only if we stay focused on Him. It’s a peace that transcends human understanding (Philippians 4:7). And what be the cause of this peace? We trust in God - that be the cause. If we focus on anything else, we may, like Peter walking on the water, sink. Remember, he saw the wind & waves, losing sight of Jesus (Matt. 14:25-31). The more I keep my eyes on Jesus and not my troubles, the easier it is for me to trust Him and remain at peace.
