Who Needs Help

Independence is the goal for most of us growing up. We wanted to be on our own, make our own decisions and live our own life. The problem with an independent spirit is not asking for help when we need it. But in order to ask for help we must admit to a deficiency or weakness. The advantages humans have are a blessing and a curse. Imagine the trouble dogs could get in if they had thumbs. The blessing of our advantages (thumbs / brains) is we can do a lot of things ourselves. The curse is thinking we can do it all. What is clear is we have weaknesses and must turn to:

GOD, OUR HELPER…

”…For Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” II Corinthians 12:10

As knowledgeable and tuned in to God as Paul was, he still had issues and problems. In Romans 7, he grieved over his struggle with sin, over the course of his ministry, he spoke of troubles with the Pharisees (beaten and jailed), and in II Corinthians, he wrote of his ‘thorn in the flesh’. He also tells us that in all these adversities, God’s grace (gifts and power) was what he relied on. David said it this way, ‘Give us aid against the enemy, for human help is worthless (Psalm 60:11). But what if God was unable or unwilling to help? What would be the point of serving a god like that? This was Isaiah’s argument. Thankfully, our God is not only capable, but willing to help.

…AND OUR HOME.

”Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.” John 14:1-2 (NKJ)

The very worst thing that can happen to someone is to die. If you had a deadly disease, you’d want to know how long you had. As believers in God, we have forever - that’s how long. Our ‘deathday’ on earth is our birthday in heaven. This is because Jesus is going to prepare a place for us (John 14:2), and that place is our Father’s House. Just think about what heaven offers: God will dwell with us; no more death; sorrow; tears; pain; darkness or anything impure. (Revelation 21-22). This is what and who awaits us.
